Common Mistakes That Ruin Nail Extensions

We know how much you love your beautiful, elegant nail extensions. But all it takes is one single clumsy mistake to waste all the money you spend on your session. This mistake can be from your side as well as from the side of your nail salon.
Nail extensions need proper aftercare from your side to last without damaging your natural nails. It's also essential to ensure no errors happen during the application, prep, and curing stages as well. This blog describes these mistakes in detail.
Let’s explore these mistakes, starting with those that can occur on the side of the nail salon.

Inadequate Nail Prep

This is a crucial step where mistakes happen during your nail session if a proper professional isn’t chosen.

Mistake 1: Skipping dehydration

Ensure your nail technician wipes your nails with 90% isopropyl alcohol or a professional dehydrator. This must be done to clean natural oils, which can cause lifting later.

Mistake 2: Not removing the Invisible Cuticle

Nail extensions placed over the dead skin on the nail plate are mostly invisible and can later lift prematurely. Make sure the technician scrapes and removes this before applying the nail product.

Mistake 3: Over-filing the Nail Plate

You often face aggressive procedures in salons in Sri Lanka. These procedures can also cause your nail extensions to get ruined. Watch out for salon workers who may file your natural nail aggressively, which causes it to be thin, weak, and prone to fractures. Request them to slow down if they are filing too aggressively.

Application Errors

This layer of your nail session can affect your results as well as your nail health. Watch out for these mistakes:

 Mistake 1: Flooding Cuticles

Skin close to the nail, especially the cuticle, is sensitive to harsh chemical products like nail polish, gel, and acrylic. Letting them touch the skin can cause lifting and allergic reactions. Be highly cautious whether your technician leaves a tiny gap (about 1mm) at the cuticle line.

Mistake 2: Incorrect Tip Sizes

If the tip sizes of your nail extensions are too wide or too narrow, it creates air pockets. Eventually, this also weakens the extension and traps moisture, causing bacterial infections. Sizing up or down more than you should can result negatively.

Mistake 3: Wrong Base Coat

Different nail extension types require different types of base coats to bond correctly. Skipping the base coat or using the wrong type both prevents the tips and builder gels from adhering to the nail.

Curing and Shaping Mistakes

Mistake 1: Under-curing gel

If you’re not attentive, some unprofessional salon technicians might get away with curing your nails too short to get it done. This can be caused by using a low-quality UV/LED lamp for curing as well. If you are getting a gel nail extension session, this is crucial for you.

Mistake 2: Using Too Much Product

Applying thick, chunky layers causes uneven curing, bubbling, and chubby-looking nails. This can waste your investment and time.

Mistake 3: Incorrect Finger Positioning

This mistake can be caused by both you and your nail technician. Holding fingers flat while getting acrylic sets causes products to run into cuticles and side walls.
Keep the finger pointing slightly downward so excess adhesive flows away from the skin.

Proper Aftercare after Nail Extensions

If you want to perfect aftercare after your nail session, avoid these mistakes:

Mistake 1: Peeling or biting them off

This is the #1 way to ruin extensions. It strips away layers of your natural keratin. Avoid this and always soak off extensions with acetone.

Mistake 2: Using Nails as Tools

Snapping open cans or scratching off stickers should be avoided at any cost after your nail extension session. These tasks can put stress on the enhancement.

Mistake 3: Skipping cuticle oil

Many Sri Lankans neglect the cuticles after their session. Dry cuticles lead to cracked skin and early lifting. Make sure to hydrate with cuticle oils to keep the extensions flexible.
