Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Nail Art Appointment

Looking forward to your first nail art appointment? We have listed the best steps to follow, starting from the preparation phase up to what you should expect, as well as aftercare issues. After reading this blog, we aim to help you reduce messy results and troublesome situations.
Even if you are someone booking your 100th nail art session, this blog will guide you in doing it the right way and ensuring the most satisfying results for the price you pay.

How Long Does a Nail Art Appointment Take?

Your first nail art appointment takes about 30 to 90 minutes (or longer for complex designs) and includes a step-by-step process from consultation to finish.

What to Do Before You Go

Bring inspiration

If you have something specific in mind, save 1 to 2 clear photos of the design, color, or shape you want. You can even arrange some colour tones you would like to explore with the art as well. However, these are optional.
Most often, the in-house nail artist will have all of them pre-arranged so you can choose in a guided manner.

Know Your Base

Decide before the nail appointment about the foundational structure you want. This determines how much time the session will take too.
Finalise the decision, whether you are looking to add length with acrylics or gel extensions or natural nails. If the design involves a gradient or highly detailed and advanced linework, it is better if you have some kind of idea about the terms like ombre sponging, abstract brushwork, etc. Just search up some terms online and prepare.

Leave your cuticles alone

Do not cut or aggressively push them back at home. This is one of the common mistakes some clients make before their nail art session. Trimming the protective skin barrier with nippers creates tiny breaks that invite bacteria and cause infections. Heavy oils or lotions left on the nail plate ruin gel or acrylic adhesion.

Keep natural length

Avoid trimming your nails down right before the appointment so the technician has enough edge to work with. This practice also creates other issues for the nail artists, making the process harder for them

If there's an uneven or slightly broken nail, leaving it long allows the technician to file it down evenly with the rest of your nails. If you cut it short ahead of time, they have to make all the other nails match that shortest one.

Mention existing products

Let the salon know if you currently have gel, dip powder, or acrylics that need to be removed.
Regardless, the artist cleans your nails before starting. Mentioning the exact products existing can make their job easy and the session feel seamless for you.

Plan your time

Eat a small meal and use the restroom beforehand since your hands will be busy during the session. You can never say when nature calls. Don't let that interrupt the artist’s session or flow. This avoids you being in an uncomfortable situation throughout the session.

What Happens During the Appointment

1. Consultation: You talk about your preferred length, shape (such as round, square, or almond), and design.
2. Prep: Your nails are shaped, and your cuticles are gently tidied. Here, the technician can either use a dry technique or a warm water soak, based on the circumstances.
3. Application: Base coats, colors, or extensions are applied, with gel options cured. Detailed nail art is hand-painted or layered on top.
4. Review: Inspect the shape and color before you leave the chair. Minor adjustments are free at this stage.
5. Finish: A protective top coat is added, often followed by cuticle oil and hand cream. Any adjustments must be communicated before this process as adjustments require many extra steps after the top coat finishes.

Aftercare and Etiquette

  • Tipping: A standard tip is 15% to 20% of the service total, with cash preferred, if you felt like you received extraordinary service.
  • Protect your nails: Apply cuticle oil daily to prevent lifting. Avoid using your nails as tools to open cans or scratch off labels.
  • No picking: Never peel or pick off gel or acrylic polish yourself; return to a salon for safe removal.
